Wondered why Frieze this year has been reported more like a shion show than an art ir? Tom Jeffreys explains.

Is Frieze Week the new Fashion Week? That’s the question that sundry neophiliac hacks have been asking themselves over the last few days. And the answer, more or less, is yes. The huge crowds of shion kid hangers-on at the launch of the newWhite Cube in Bermondsey was the first clue. Then I was stopped no less than three times inside and outside Frieze Art Fair this week by shion bloggers and ‘trend’-spotters. And now, TheGuardian andTelegraph have run near-identical features about how they’ve just discovered Frieze and isn’t it a wonderful place to go and look at rich people wearing strange clothes. TheEvening Standard has a PR-fed ‘what to wear to the art’ photo-story (with the same image as the Guardian). It’s all very tedious.

But why all this sudden interest in covering Frieze Week as if it’s London Fashion Week? The story has always been there – I wrote about the eccentric outfits of thehead-spinningly wealthy on display at Frieze back in 2008 – but at least I then went on to discuss the art. Now,Designer Handbags Discount the art is increasingly of only secondary importance, and for two linked reasons: the first is the hiring, in 2010, of a new PR company for Frieze Art Fair. Gone were art world stalwarts Calum Sutton in vour of shion agency RelativeMO – formed back in 2009 after the merger of London-based Relative (whose clients include Erdem and Mathew Williamson) and Paris-based MO (Giles, Iceberg etc).

The second reason, and the one that explains the first Brand Name Bags Wholesale, is money. During an economic downturn, with auctions during Frieze hardly setting the world on fire – Phillips de Pury sold only 66% of lots in a tepid sale that kicked off the week – the climate is clearly not right for million-pound art deals, the kind Frieze thrives upon. Fashion of course is easier to push in the media than art, and so the masses flock to Frieze, hoping the glitz will somehow rub off on them. What all this means is that many actual arts journalists (myself included) had to wait until the public day in order to view the ir, whilst the shion editors were allowed in to the VIP view the day before. So instead of being told whether the ir is worth paying to attend (it isn’t) prospective visitors were told what Elle Macpherson was wearing at a Frieze breakst sponsored by high street shion store Cos. This kind of coverage is fine for an event like London Fashion Week which isn’t open to the public, but Frieze is, and therefore you want reporting from somebody who actually knows what they’re talking about. Sadly The Telegraph’s Lisa Armstrong, for example Ugg Boots Online, betrays her extreme ignorance when it comes to the art world by referring to Berkeley Art Fair as one of the major events of the week. Not only is it rubbish, but it’s also called something entirely different.

Of course, shion and art have long been closely linked, so this way of covering Frieze Week is in some senses hardly surprising. But why does White Cube for example want a thousand impoverished freeloaders at the opening of its new space? Unlike Frieze,Cheap Brand Handbags White Cube is free to visit – their profits come solely through the sale of artworks that only a very, very select group of people can actually afford. And it certainly isn’t those at the opening night – the real VIPs were there much earlier. But it must achieve something? And for the answer one must look to the very heart of conceptual art. Since the emergence of post-structuralist thought in the 1960s, issues of meaning and value have largely been understood not so much as intrinsic characteristics of a work of art or piece of literature handbags online cheap, for example, as products (or effects) of external systems that vary across history and cultures. With meaning and value shown to be founded on shifting sands, both become subject to a system of economy in roughly the same way as currency. So the masses gather outside White Cube because they’re told it’s the place to be by a PR-fed press, who, because the masses are there Ugg Outlet Store, cover the opening as an event of significance. The result is a feedback loop that works to add value to contemporary art, regardless of what that art actually consists of, or what the articles in question are actually about. It’s simply a numbers game.

Conceptual art is an edifice built above an abyss. Or rather it’s the only edifice that admits to the abyss. And when everyone suddenly looks down, there’s a problem. As the market shows signs of slowing,Ugg Boots Outlet it must use every available tool to shore itself up. Incomprehensible artists’ statements, the honeyed words of gallery sales directors, essays in catalogues by big name critics on the gallery pay-roll: these are no longer enougFashion handbagsh.

When art becomes just a brand, it digs for itself a hole – a cavernous hole to be filled by the ever-echoing buzz of a thousand irrelevant flies. DOWNTOWN – DNAinfo.coms Street Chic ventured into the heart of the Occupy Wall Street protest in the financial districts Zuccotti Park in search of whats revolutionizing shion.

There are strong vintage pieces reminiscent of the anti-shion movement of the late 1960s. There is homage to the Glam Rock androgyny of the 1970s, and there are plenty of Steampunk and Crust-Punk accessories, as well as surplus grunge layering from the 1990s.

Directional pieces consisted of washed flannel, ankle boots and traditionally crafted scarves, not unlike the runways of the Fall 2011 collections ofDsquared2 andBand of Outsiders. Occupation shion also included cagoule shapes (a lightweight hooded rainproof layer) spotted in the2012 spring collections ofRag and Bone.

Color and pattern also played a role in the street-to-catwalk looks. Yellow accents, gray and red plaid, military green and muted brown shades were very present within a large variety of mixed patterns and graphics.

Many shion industry trend publications have noted the return of 60s shion. The boxy-minimalist and engineered looks for Spring 2012 already feel pass against this urban wave of street clothing.

Street Chic also spotted worker gear as a notable shion component. The utility details including burly work boots, reminded us of the boot trends seen in the Fall 2011 collections ofGant by Michael Bastian andPaul Smith.

Without the Apple co-founder, would it have occurred to anyone that technology could be an aspirational accessory?

Steve Jobs: shion inspiration_Fashion hand,I arrived home from theParis shion shows last week to hear the news that Steve Jobs had died. Strangely, in all the thousands of pages devoted to Jobs since then including a 25-slide pictorial ode to Jobs turtlenecks on the Huffington Post there has been surprisingly little attention paid to his influence on shion. By shion, I am not talking about mens wear and how Jobs penchant for turtlenecks and jeans changed the Silicon Valley dress code. He understood that if you wore the same thing every time you appeared in public you became both instantly identifiable and the owner of a look. This idea, which means no one else can wear the same clothes without referencing you, owes much to shion figures such as Coco Chanel and Anna Wintour.

And I am not talking about his influence on retail, though clearly all that stuff about store experience the shion industry loves to spout has its roots on some level in the Apple stores, which are hang-out amusement parks as much as tech emporiums. Its hard to remember now but back in the days BJ (Before Jobs), conventional wisdom had it their value lay in what was inside (their circuit board), not what was outside (generally uninspiring grey plastic), and certainly not in the seamless way the two went together: the jacket and tie, the sweater and skirt.

As a result, to the shion world they werent that different from an air conditioner or a can of peas.
